  • A postpartum doula is a trained professional who provides physical, emotional, and informational support to a new mother and her family after the birth of a baby. Their primary goal is to help the mother transition smoothly into her new role, promoting healing and well-being during the postpartum period. Here are some key aspects of what a postpartum doula does:

Emotional Support: Offering encouragement, reassurance, and a listening ear to help new mothers navigate the emotional ups and downs of the postpartum period.

Physical Support: Assisting with newborn care, including feeding, diapering, and soothing techniques. They may also help with light household tasks to ensure the mother can rest and recover.

Education: Providing evidence-based information on infant care, breastfeeding, postpartum recovery, and parenting to empower new parents to make informed decisions.

Practical Assistance: Helping with meal preparation, light housekeeping, and running errands, so the mother can focus on bonding with her baby and self-care.

Family Support: Offering support to the entire family, including siblings, to help them adjust to the new family dynamics.

Postpartum doulas tailor their services to meet the specific needs of each family, offering flexible and compassionate care during this critical time.

  • You can benefit the most from a postpartum doula during the early weeks and months following the birth of your baby. This period, often referred to as the "fourth trimester," is a crucial time for recovery, adjustment, and bonding. Here are some specific way a postpartum doula can help:

Immediately After Birth: In the first few days and weeks postpartum, a doula can provide essential support as you recover from childbirth and begin to care for your newborn. This includes help with breastfeeding, understanding newborn behavior, and managing the emotional highs and lows that often accompany this period.

First Few Weeks at Home: As you transition from hospital to home, a doula can assist with establishing routines, ensuring you get adequate rest, and providing practical help with household tasks so you can focus on healing and bonding with your baby.

  • I charge by the hour for my services. I require a minimum of 4 hours to be scheduled Monday-Saturday, excluding holidays. My pricing page provides specifics on my pricing.

  • This is completely up to the family! I will chat with you during the free consultation and evaluate what services you need and how often you need the support. Generally here are examples of when certain schedules would be helpful:

Daily Visits: In the initial days and weeks after birth, some families opt for daily visits to receive consistent support as they adjust to life with a newborn and as the mother recovers from childbirth.

Several Times a Week: Many families find it helpful to have the doula visit several times a week, especially during the first month postpartum. This schedule provides regular assistance and guidance while allowing the family some independent time to adapt.

Weekly Visits: For those who need less intensive support, weekly visits may suffice. These visits can help address ongoing questions, provide emotional support, and ensure everything is progressing smoothly.

Overnight Support: Some postpartum doulas offer overnight services to help parents get more rest. This can be particularly beneficial in the first few weeks when sleep deprivation is most challenging. I am unfortunately not booking overnight clients at this time but please feel free to contact me still, as I have recommendations for great postpartum doulas that do overnight shifts.

As Needed: I offer flexible scheduling based on your family's needs. This might mean more frequent visits initially, tapering off as your family becomes more comfortable and confident.
